Harvest

Climatic conditions

The weather pattern in Pauillac in 2016 had two main features:

  • A very wet winter and spring, with more than half the annual rainfall occurring in the first four months of the year, including a record 240mm in January.
  • An extremely dry summer and autumn, without any significant rainfall, leading to a negative water balance at the end of the year.

The crop was large but the grapes remained rather small as a consequence of the summer drought, making for dense and concentrated wines.

The grapes ripened slowly in hot weather in August and September, achieving excellent maturity. The harvest started on 28 September with the Merlot parcels and continued in perfect conditions until 15 October.

Each grape variety and each parcel were vinified separately as usual, in order to allow them to express their brightest characteristics.

The wines offer remarkable colour, intense aromas of fruit and spice, and a dense mouthfeel enhanced by rich and well-rounded tannins.

By its density and consistency, the 2016 vintage compares with the finest vintages of the 21st century to date.

Tasting Notes

Garnet red with a ruby hue, the wine initially has a discreet and elegant nose which opens up with airing to reveal succulent aromas of brandied morello cherries mingled with peppery, minty notes.

From a substantial and powerful attack, the mid-palate reveals a close-knit, creamy texture set off by well-integrated, structured tannins.

The succulence hinted at on the nose is expressed in black fruit and mocha notes, leading into an opulent finish which underlines the wine’s complexity.
